2014 Parent and Family Orientation Schedule

Saturday, August 23, 2014

9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. - WELCOME AND REGISTRATION

  • New students and parents pick up orientation information.
     

9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. - MOVE IN

  • New students may move into their residence hall room. Proctors and Assistant Proctors will be on hand to assist new students.
     

11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. - MOVE-IN LUNCH BREAK

  • Come as you are and join Vice-Chancellor John McCardell and his wife Bonnie for a casual lunch at their home, Chen Hall.  Drop by anytime between 11:00 and 2:00 for a light lunch and a chance to meet other students and families. 
     

11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. 

  • Lunch is also available for purchase at McClurg Dining Hall, The Globe Cafe, and Stirling’s Coffee House.
  • Student Post Office (SPO) open for USPS, UPS and Fed-Ex pick-up.
  • Telecommunications open for student ID card photographs.
  • Health Services will be open to discuss health forms and insurance information.
     

2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. - WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY AND THE FRESHMAN YEAR

  • This will be a session led by Dean of Students Eric Hartman and Associate Dean of Students Becky Spurlock welcoming parents and family members to the Sewanee community and reviewing the rhythm of a typical freshman year. Parents will learn how to partner with university departments and services to facilitate a successful first year for their student.


2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. - UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES AND SPECIAL COLLECTIONS OPEN HOUSE

3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. - PARENTS’ INFORMATION SESSION I: Understanding Billing and Student Accounts

  • This will be a session led by the staff in the Treasurer’s Office to review how online billing works throughout the year.
     

3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. - PRE-PROFESSIONAL INFORMATION SESSIONS FOR PARENTS

  • This is an opportunity for parents of students considering Sewanee’s pre-professional curriculum to get detailed advice from faculty with regard to academic courses and co-curricular experiences. The information sessions will include:
    • Education
    • Pre-Business
    • Pre-Engineering
    • Pre-Law
    • Pre-Med/Health
       

5:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. - PICNIC SUPPER

  • Supper for the new students and their families with University staff. (Rain location: McClurg Hall).
     

7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. - PARENTS’ INFORMATION SESSION II

  • This will be a session led by the staff in the University Wellness Center and Sewanee Dining to showcase all of the ways the University works to support the health and wellness of Sewanee students.

Stirling’s Coffee House opens at 8 a.m. and remains open until 5 p.m.

8:00 a.m. - WELCOME RECEPTION AND BREAKFAST

  • University Deans and members of the Sewanee Parents’ Council welcome all new students and parents with a full breakfast compliments of the Dean of Students Office.
     

9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. - PARENTS’ INFORMATION PANEL

  • A panel discussion with students, members of the Sewanee Parents’ Council, and the Office of Career and Leadership Development reflecting on the first-year college experience. Members of the Student Life Cabinet will be available for questions and answers following the panel discussion.
     

10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. - The University offices listed below are staffed to answer your questions.

  • Residential Life Office
  • Financial Aid Office
  • Health Services
  • Student Accounts Office


10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. - THE UNIVERSITY CHAPEL SERVICE

  • The Rev. Thomas E. Macfie Jr., University Chaplain and Dean of All Saints' Chapel
  • All Saints’ Chapel is the University church and as such its ministry is ecumenical and its services are open to everyone. The services of worship in All Saints’ follow the usage of the Episcopal Church. Services are held at 8:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 6:30 p.m. each Sunday the college is in session.
     

11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. - LUNCHEON

  • There is no charge for students on the meal plan. Parents are invited to have lunch compliments of the Dean of Students Office.
     

1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

  • Student Post Office (SPO) open for USPS, UPS and Fed-Ex pick-up.
     

1:15 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. - THE VICE-CHANCELLOR’S ADDRESS

  • Parents and new students are formally greeted by Dr. John McCardell, vice-chancellor.
     

This concludes the parent and family orientation schedule of events. Programming for new students will continue through the rest of the week.
