In the month of February, more than 300 new Greek members took an alcohol education course offered by the Student Life Division. The students had two options for the course: a presentation led by Dr. Jessica Siegel of Psychology that focused on the effects of alcohol on the brain and a class taught by Dean Alexander Bruce that stressed normative behavior and the importance of intervention. Students who completed a survey reported the course changed their perception of drinking on campus: statistical data show that there is much less high-risk drinking than students thought (the high-risk drinking is just so noticeable that it colors the perception of consumption). Armed with knowledge and intervention strategies, Greeks are now better able to help promote a safer, healthier campus for all.
